Scientists from Denmark first created an artificial human ovary

Scientists have created an artificial ovary from human tissue and eggs. In the future, an artificial ovary will help women, who have suffered serious illnesses that adversely affect reproductive function, to have children.

A team of specialists from Copenhagen showed a sample of the ovary that could save live eggs for several weeks.

Doctors also hope that artificially created ovaries will help those women who have undergone aggressive therapy after diseases such as cancer, multiple sclerosis, beta-thalassemia.

Currently, there is a preliminary cryopreservation of ovarian tissue. A woman who has suffered serious illnesses is given a fertilized egg cell, but with certain types of cancer (leukemia and ovarian cancer), this technique is ineffective, as it can trigger a relapse.

Tests of an artificial ovary have already passed on laboratory mice. Animals were transplanted with specially prepared ovarian tissue, which contained twenty human follicles. A quarter of them remained alive for more than three weeks, blood vessels began to form around the ovaries.

“This is the first proof that we can support these eggs ourselves,” said Susanne Pors, a staff member at Rigshospitalet National Hospital of Denmark. Susan added that it would take from 5 to 10 years when it would be possible for people to apply this technique.
